Chapter Seven

Shawn had woken up more exhausted than he was when he went to sleep. The day before had been shit to say the least, but being with Jason was the only place that made it possible for him to deal with the whole nightmare of what he witnessed. He’d probably been better off getting a full four hours of sleep.

When Jason had woken him up with a blow job at nearly two o’clock in the morning he wasn’t going to complain. The old saying always said to never look a gift horse in the mouth. He assumed that applied to a gorgeous mouth sucking him off as well.

The mandatory roll call at the station organized by the sheriff didn’t take place. Apparently the crime scene investigators were at the Wilkins property all night and still were working on the perimeter of the property.

For the past hour he’d been sucking down coffee like it was water. His stomach was upset after his late-night nuked fried chicken so he stuck to a bran muffin that Alvarez had brought in.

After his initial shock of finding George Wilkins’s dead body yesterday, the kid appeared to be keeping things in check. When the reinforcements had shown up at the ranch, he’d been quickly debriefed and then went into town to handle notifications to Tilly Rawlings and did his best to keep the town gossip and panic to a minimum.

For the most part he did a good job, but there was only so much a guy could do when the entire community was filled with people who had lived here their whole lives. Between word of mouth and everyone knowing everyone else, it ran through the grapevine quick. Which is also how he assumed the news station from the neighboring town had gotten ahold of the information.

It had pissed him off that the death had leaked so quickly to the press, but he took small solace in the fact that it seemed the locals had assumed it was a stranger who had happened upon their small community. The very last thing he needed on top of everything else was to have neighbors pointing fingers and accusing each other. The situation was a big enough clusterfuck on its own. He didn’t need any drama added to it.

“You’re not gonna believe this.”

Shawn looked up to find Alvarez coming towards his desk like a bull in a china shop. He knocked into a chair and just about took out one of the deputies brought in for backup on his way over.

“Jesus. Slow down.” Shawn motioned for him to sit down. “What’s going on?”

“I was just talking to one of the crime scene investigators outside. They said the feds are coming in to assist in the investigation.”

Shawn stopped his coffee cup just short of his lips. He had been about to take a drink, but the idea of federal agents coming in set off all sorts of alarm bells in his head. “The feds? As in…?”

“As in the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” he answered.
